Los investigadores de la Universidad Aut\u00f3noma Chapingo (Uach), Pedro Ponce Javana y Gerardo Noriega Altamirano, presentaron un nuevo paquete tecnol\u00f3gico para la producci\u00f3n de alto rendimiento de ma\u00edz amarillo org\u00e1nico para reducir la dependencia alimentaria de este grano b\u00e1sico proveniente de Estados Unidos.<\/p>\n

Actualmente en M\u00e9xico se destinan 500 mil hect\u00e1reas para producir alimentos org\u00e1nicos entre los que se encuentran hortalizas, caf\u00e9 y frutales. Hay m\u00e1s de 30 productos org\u00e1nicos certificados. <\/p>\n

Aseguraron que dicho paquete puede convertirse en pol\u00edtica p\u00fablica al tratarse de ecointesificaci\u00f3n agr\u00edcola en el cultivo de ma\u00edz amarillo de temporal bajo un sistema de producci\u00f3n org\u00e1nica. <\/p>\n

Expusieron que es factible su uso para la producci\u00f3n masiva de ma\u00edz amarillo org\u00e1nico, en los estados del centro y sur del pa\u00eds. Con este proyecto se podr\u00eda disminuir la importaci\u00f3n anual de 14 millones de toneladas de esta gram\u00ednea al pa\u00eds.<\/p>\n

Asimismo, anunciaron que para validar el paquete tecnol\u00f3gico de alto rendimiento impulsan la creaci\u00f3n de certificaci\u00f3n en la materia adem\u00e1s de que solicitar\u00e1n su aval al Instituto Nacional de Investigaciones Forestales, Agr\u00edcolas y Forestales (INIFAP) y al Centro Internacional de Mejoramiento de Ma\u00edz y Trigo (CIMMYT). <\/p>\n

Detallaron que el objetivo es que con la validaci\u00f3n y certificaci\u00f3n del nuevo paquete tecnol\u00f3gico se facilite el acceso al cr\u00e9dito de los peque\u00f1os y medianos productores a trav\u00e9s de la Financiera Rural y el Fideicomiso Instituido en Relaci\u00f3n con la Agricultura.<\/p>\n

Los especialistas aseguraron que esta alternativa permitir\u00eda en un lapso de cuatro a\u00f1os, avanzar en la reducci\u00f3n de la dependencia que dicho grano proveniente, principalmente, de Estados Unidos.<\/p>\n

El profesor investigador, Noriega Altamirano, detall\u00f3 que la Uach a trav\u00e9s del Programa Especial de Extensi\u00f3n y Vinculaci\u00f3n Universitaria, promueve la ecointensificaci\u00f3n agr\u00edcola en el cultivo de ma\u00edz amarillo de temporal bajo un sistema de producci\u00f3n org\u00e1nica en el estado de Morelos.<\/p>\n

Con \u00e9ste se promueve el uso del an\u00e1lisis de suelos, la remineralizaci\u00f3n de suelos, la aplicaci\u00f3n de abonos org\u00e1nicos, la fertilizaci\u00f3n foliar con nutrientes, amino\u00e1cidos y enzimas, el manejo biol\u00f3gico de plagas y enfermedades.<\/p>\n

Actualmente el 24.37 por ciento del ma\u00edz amarillo que se produce en el pa\u00eds se cultiva en Chihuahua, 19.4, en Tamaulipas, 19.2, en Jalisco, 13.16 en Chiapas, 4.6, en Sinaloa y 0.27 por ciento en Morelos. <\/p>\n

El ma\u00edz amarillo bajo condiciones de riego logra un rendimiento medio nacional de 8.25 toneladas por hect\u00e1rea, mientras que en condiciones de temporal alcanza 3.27. <\/p>\n

En Me\u0301xico el consumo de ma\u00edz alcanza alrededor de 39 millones de toneladas.<\/p>\n

El ma\u00edz blanco, durante el a\u00f1o agr\u00edcola 2016 se sembr\u00f3 en alrededor de siete millones de hect\u00e1reas, que alcanzaron una producci\u00f3n de 24.5 millones de toneladas; mientras que el ma\u00edz amarillo se sembr\u00f3 en 625 mil hect\u00e1reas y se cosecharon 3.5 millones de toneladas.<\/p>\n

Dijo que la producci\u00f3n mundial de ma\u00edz amarillo se dirige a la ganader\u00eda y a la industria del almid\u00f3n en un 62 por ciento y 38 por ciento al consumo humano, industrial, semilla y artesanal.<\/p>\n

Los principales pa\u00edses productores de ma\u00edz son: Estados Unidos con: 383.4 millones de toneladas; Brasil con 82.5; la Uni\u00f3n Europea con 61.1; Argentina con 36.5; Ucrania con 26 millones de toneladas y en sexto lugar, M\u00e9xico con 28.2 millones de toneladas.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"

It is valued locally not only for its record-breaking qualities but for use in traditional dishes. However, modern improved varieties yield more and have largely displaced landraces, especially for sale. Because they are often grown close together, the Jala maize has outcrossed with improved varieties, meaning that its height, ear length, ear thickness, and growing season have all diminished over the last century. In 1907 a visiting scientist recorded ears 60 cm long, whereas in 2007 the longest ear measured 36 cm. Hern\u00e1ndez, a research professor at the Colegio de Postgraduados, a Mexican agricultural institution, is working to recover these lost traits. In 2007, when this photo was taken, Hern\u00e1ndez was growing Jala landrace seed collected from 22 farmers to recombine the genetic variation. The seed was to be redistributed to interested farmers, safeguarded in CIMMYT\u2019s germplasm bank, and re-sown next year to begin selection for longer ears. He was also growing out Jala landrace samples from CIMMYT\u2019s bank for selection and combination with current landrace materials. In addition to recovery and conservation, Hern\u00e1ndez aims to develop varieties with added value; for example, dual-purpose maize providing good grain and husk yields, as well as specialized varieties for green ears or pozole. Maize is an essential part of Jala's culture, and each year the town enjoys a two-week Feria del Elote, or maize ear festival. Hern\u00e1ndez helps to organize an annual competition for the longest maize ear, established as part of the festival in 1981, in order to celebrate Jala's unique maize and to encourage farmers to keep growing it. \u201cAs a genetic resource, it\u2019s unique in the world,\u201d says Hern\u00e1ndez. \u201cNot only that: if we lose this maize we lose our traditions, culture, and identity.\u201d Photo credit: Eloise Phipps\/CIMMYT. Arah\u00f3n Hern\u00e1ndez Guzm\u00e1n examines an maize ear on his experimental plot of the Jala landrace. This maize, native to Jala, in the state of Nayarit, on the Pacific coast of Mexico, is famed for producing the world's largest ears. It is valued locally not only for its record-breaking qualities but for use in traditional dishes. However, modern improved varieties yield more and have largely displaced landraces, especially for sale. Because they are often grown close together, the Jala maize has outcrossed with improved varieties, meaning that its height, ear length, ear thickness, and growing season have all diminished over the last century. In 1907 a visiting scientist recorded ears 60 cm long, whereas in 2007 the longest ear measured 36 cm. Hern\u00e1ndez, a research professor at the Colegio de Postgraduados, a Mexican agricultural institution, is working to recover these lost traits. In 2007, when this photo was taken, Hern\u00e1ndez was growing Jala landrace seed collected from 22 farmers to recombine the genetic variation. The seed was to be redistributed to interested farmers, safeguarded in CIMMYT\u2019s germplasm bank, and re-sown next year to begin selection for longer ears. He was also growing out Jala landrace samples from CIMMYT\u2019s bank for selection and combination with current landrace materials. In addition to recovery and conservation, Hern\u00e1ndez aims to develop varieties with added value; for example, dual-purpose maize providing good grain and husk yields, as well as specialized varieties for green ears or pozole. Maize is an essential part of Jala's culture, and each year the town enjoys a two-week Feria del Elote, or maize ear festival. Hern\u00e1ndez helps to organize an annual competition for the longest maize ear, established as part of the festival in 1981, in order to celebrate Jala's unique maize and to encourage farmers to keep growing it. \u201cAs a genetic resource, it\u2019s unique in the world,\u201d says Hern\u00e1ndez. \u201cNot only that: if we lose this maize we lose our traditions, culture, and identity.\u201d Photo credit: Eloise Phipps\/CIMMYT.
